Google+ – Your Nonprofit’s Most Underutilized Social Network

Google+If standing out in the crowd isn’t your thing, then that’s OK. But when it comes to marketing your nonprofit organization online, you have no choice but to put yourself out there if you want to be successful. If your nonprofit is a small organization, incorporating social media into your marketing plan may require some big steps on your part to identify social channels and to set up accounts. Therefore, it’s important to understand how social media can help your nonprofit increase awareness and potentially increase engagement in the long run.

The first step to understanding social media is to choose your platforms wisely. According to Business Insider, there are about 2.2 billion Google+ profiles and this number is growing steadily.  Is your nonprofit using Google+ to share information about its mission, programs and upcoming events?  If you answered no to this question, then you are one of the many nonprofit professionals who are under utilizing Goolge+ as a referral source.  Here are some important reasons as to why it is still worth getting a Google+ account.

Benefits of Google+

There are many benefits to being a product of Google in the cyber world. Google connects all of your Google activity, including Gmail accounts, YouTube and google map searches. It is able to gather an archive of information about what you may be interested in due to these profiles and searches and from there is able to direct you towards where you should be marketing your own company. In addition, what you post about your own company is searchable on Google. Because of the link between the two databases, you are basically killing two birds with one stone.

Clair Cain Miller from the New York Times wrote of the benefits of Google being associated with Google+, “Chandra Magee, The Economist’s senior director of audience development, emphasized the value of Plus as a search engine optimization tool. ‘There is potential there to help us get in front of new audiences,’ she said. ‘But it also helps with our S.E.O. strategy because our posts on Google+ actually show up in our search engine results.’” Imagine being on the top of everyone’s Google search just by obtaining an account!

There Are G+ Circles for Everyone

The seemingly intrusive advertisements tailored to your every move used by both Google and Facebook is now a benefit with your control. Through Google+ you can make your own circles and connect with people who have specifically joined these groups because of a common interest. For example, by creating a circle for “Small Nonprofits” and then adding intelligent and thoughtful comments on other’s posts, you are creating a conversation with people who actually want to hear. At the same time, it is easy to create a profile and post at strategic times about your own company catering to this same focus group. Not, for example, your friend’s grandma who is your Facebook friend for purely social reasons.

It’s Growing

Google+ has an advantage because of the fact that it plays to a social and professional aspect that most other social media platforms keep compartmentalized. A user is able to differentiate between these realms by themselves and can cater their own promotions to their audience. Google+ gained the most sign-ups of any social media resource right off the bat, they have room for an immense amount of growth. By establishing yourself now, you are ensuring attention as the network grows with Google’s guiding hand.

It’s Cost Effective

The amount of marketing material put out into the advertising world is often not cheap. By using Google+ Communities and Circles to make connections, the cost of attending networking events will be reduced. In addition, the Google Hangout feature is a way to get face to face time with business partners or clients without the travel costs. The convenience allowed through this multi-faceted resource is what makes it so strong. So open your eyes and start connecting with people in a way that is simultaneously getting your name on top of that search page!
