Educators to Africa

Educators to AfricaEducators to Africa is a common interest organization that was formed after a unique six week study tour to four West African countries as a result of the school district of Philadelphia responding to the November 17, 1967 Students March on the Board of Education for Black History to be Taught in the Schools which created the Office of African and African-American studies.

The School District, under the leadership of Office Director William C. Green, the University of Connecticut, and the African American Institute headquartered in New York City, co-sponsored “Educators to Africa 1970,” an educational travel program that took 131 Educators from 25 states in the United States to Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Dahomey (Benin) for intensive historical, social and cultural studies. The 38 participants from Philadelphia formed the largest single contingent. Inspired by all the had learned and the hospitality they had received, members of the Philadelphia contingent created an organization that would allow them to maintain closer relationships with our brothers and sisters on The Mother Continent.

In 2016, YOakleyPR worked with the William C. Green Legacy Scholarship Fund committee to design marketing materials that would support the committee’s goal to raise $15,000 in order to provide scholarships to African America-Diaspora students committed to implementing programs and projects highlighting Black contributions to world history and culture.

Shoot for the StarsShoot for the Stars has been educating male and female students since 1980, and has been a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization since 2011.

Founded by NBA Hall of Famer Wali Jones, and Ken Hamilton, who retired as the all-time wins leader at Benjamin Franklin High School basketball coach, Shoot for the Stars is devoted to making a difference in the lives of young people. Our coaching staff consists of retired educators, coaches and professional athletes, committed to using athletics as a socialization mechanism so you can feel confident in the fact that your child will not only learn the fundamentals of the sport, but also learn life skills that will help them develop positive relationships with their peers and seek healthy alternatives to alcohol and substance abuse.

In 2015, YOakleyPR worked with Vice President Ken Hamilton to support the design and maintenance of the new Shoot for the Stars website (www.ShootForTheStarsLegends.org). This organization also became an active user of the Google for Nonprofits program’s IT offerings, YouTube for Nonprofits, and Google Ad Grant service.

In 2016, YOakleyPR worked with the Shoot for the Stars team to revitalize and enhance their branding and development strategy in order to fundraise $5,000. One part of this strategy included the redesign of the Shoot for the Stars logo and new marketing materials highlighting new ways to contribute and engage with the organization. Proceeds from the fundraising campaign benefited: the Boys & Girls Back to Basics Summer Basketball Camp and the High School Basketball Showcase.

Cheyney University National Alumni Association

cheyney university national alumni associationThe Cheyney Alumni Association met for the first time on commencement day in May 1862.  The association proved to be very active during its early years, taking on projects of significant social and economic importance.  Being acutely aware that education was perhaps the best means at the time to help eradicate prejudice against their race, the members set up a project that involved determining the number, location, and condition of all black schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Ohio.

The Cheyney University National Alumni Association is proud to recognize the academic achievements, community and university involvement, and outstanding potential of current and incoming students by offering a few scholarships each year to qualified candidates. The Cheyney University National Alumni Association and its chapters help students reach their academic goals by awarding scholarship funds annually.

The Cheyney University National Alumni Association (CUNAA) Public Relations Committee publishes a bi-annual newsletter called, The Spirit, which highlights Alumni Chapter events, scholarship initiatives, and individual Cheyney Alumni achievements. The newsletter is printed and each edition is made available online. YOakleyPR has worked with the CUNAA Board of Directors to support the production of the newsletter by providing graphic design and copy editing services since 2013.
